Machine applique for beginners: the three stitches, the fabric, and the first stitch-out

How embroidery-machine applique works: placement run, tack-down, satin border, what to buy, how to hoop, pre-cut vs trim-in-hoop, and a first 100 mm heart stitch-out.

Most pages that rank for "machine appliqué" are about a sewing machine with a zigzag foot. This one is about an embroidery machine reading a file: the machine draws the outline, stops, you lay fabric, it stitches it down, stops, you trim, and it covers the edge with satin. The technique is different enough that the advice does not transfer, so this guide starts from the file.

What an appliqué file actually contains

An embroidery appliqué design is three paths stitched in order, usually saved as three colour blocks so the machine pauses between them:

  1. Placement run. A running stitch exactly on the shape outline. Our files use a 2.5 mm stitch length. It stitches on the bare base fabric and shows you where the appliqué piece goes.
  2. Tack-down run. A second running stitch inset 1.2 mm inside the outline, so it lands on the appliqué fabric you just laid down and holds it while you trim.
  3. Satin border. A dense zigzag centred on the outline, 3 to 5 mm wide, with a light zigzag underlay first. It covers the raw fabric edge and is the only part anyone sees.

Ink/Stitch's appliqué tutorial describes the same three layers and recommends giving them separate colours "so the machine stops between steps". That is the whole trick: a colour change is a pause, and appliqué needs two pauses. The placement, tack-down and satin guide goes deeper on each layer; here we stay practical.

The allowance is the gap between the placement line and the cut line. Too small and the raw edge peeks out from under the satin; too big and fabric shows past it.

You need less than the craft-store aisle suggests.

Two notes on adhesive. A fusible web is ironed to the back of the appliqué fabric before cutting, so the piece arrives stiff, clean-edged and fray-resistant, and it fuses to the base at the end. Choose a sewable grade; the "no sew" grades gum up needles. Temporary spray is faster and needs no ironing; Odif describes 505 as a temporary adhesive that does not stain and disappears in the wash (Odif product page). Our placement error model assumes spray plus two alignment marks for the "careful" setting, so it is not a lesser choice.

Stabilizer and hooping

The rule practitioners use: stable woven base, tear-away; anything that stretches, cut-away. EmbroideryHooping calls cut-away "the industry standard" for a knit T-shirt that will be washed and recommends the soft no-show mesh version for children's clothing (EmbroideryHooping on appliqué on a PE800). Towels and fleece additionally want a water-soluble topping on top so the satin does not sink into the nap. The fabric and stabilizer guide has the full matrix.

Hooping for appliqué is ordinary hooping: stabilizer and base fabric together, tight enough that the surface sounds like a drum when tapped, without stretching a knit. If the base cannot be hooped (a small sleeve, a thick towel), hoop the stabilizer alone, spray it, and float the base on top, then run a basting box if your machine offers one.

Check that the design fits your hoop's sewing field with 3 mm to spare. A 100 mm heart in a Brother 4x4 hoop (100 by 100 mm field) is at the limit; a 5x7 hoop is comfortable.

The three colour stops, step by step

Load the file. The machine reads three colour blocks; ignore the colour names, it is one thread throughout unless you want a contrasting placement line.

Stop 1 arrives after the placement run. The outline is now stitched on the base. Lay the appliqué piece over it. With a pre-cut piece, line the fabric edge up so the placement stitches are hidden by a hair; the piece is cut about 0.5 to 0.8 mm larger than the line, so the line should just disappear under the edge. With an oversized scrap, cover the whole outline with at least 10 mm to spare on every side. Press the piece down, or fuse it if you used fusible web and can reach it with a mini iron.

Stop 2 arrives after the tack-down. The piece is now sewn on 1.2 mm inside the outline. If you pre-cut, do nothing. If you used a scrap, take the hoop off the machine (do not unhoop), and trim the scrap close to the tack-down, leaving about 1 mm of fabric outside the stitches. The satin will cover roughly 2 mm outside the outline, so a little excess is fine; cutting the tack-down thread is not.

The satin border runs to the end. The zigzag underlay goes first (one column every 2 mm, inset 0.4 mm from each rail, so it never shows), then the satin at 0.4 mm column spacing. Do not touch the hoop while it stitches.

A contrasting bobbin or a placement run in a bright colour makes the first stop easy to read. Once you trust the process, switch everything to the design colour.

Pre-cut or trim in the hoop?

Both work. They differ in where the fabric edge ends up, which is the only thing the satin cares about.

Trim in the hoop costs nothing and tolerates rough placement, because the piece is oversized. The downside is the edge: you are cutting freehand against stitches, on a hooped garment, with the machine waiting. On tight inner curves and letters the scissors cannot follow, and an uneven edge is the main cause of raw fabric peeking out later.

Pre-cut with a cut file moves the accuracy problem to a machine. Our cut file is the placement line offset outward by a per-shape allowance, typically 0.5 to 0.8 mm for a 4 mm satin, exported in real millimetres as SVG or DXF for Cricut, Silhouette and ScanNCut. The piece then has to be placed to within about half a millimetre, which is why the adhesive and the alignment marks matter. The cut allowance guide explains where those numbers come from; the short version is that a 4 mm satin catches a fabric edge anywhere from about 1.2 mm inside the outline to 2 mm outside it, and the allowance aims for the middle of that window after fabric pull-in.

For a first stitch-out, pre-cut a simple shape by hand from the printed template if you have no cutter. A heart has no inner curves tight enough to defeat scissors.

Your first stitch-out: a 100 mm heart

A heart at 100 mm with a 4 mm satin on quilting cotton is the shape we use as a reference because it has one sharp tip, two convex lobes and one concave notch, and it scores well without care beyond the basics.

  1. Open the studio, choose the heart template (or upload any simple SVG), set the size to 100 mm, fabric "woven", placement "normal". Read the prediction; it should say around 92 percent.
  2. Download the machine file for your brand (PES for Brother and Baby Lock, JEF for Janome, VP3 for Viking and Pfaff, DST for commercial machines) and the cut file or printable template.
  3. Iron fusible web to the back of a 130 by 130 mm piece of quilting cotton, or plan to spray it. Cut the heart on the cutter at 100 percent scale, or with scissors along the template line.
  4. Hoop one layer of medium tear-away with the base cotton. Load the file. Stitch block 1, the placement run.
  5. At the stop, peel the fusible backing (or spray the back of the piece lightly), and lay the heart so the placement line just vanishes under its edge all round. Start at the tip, then settle the lobes. Press with your fingers.
  6. Stitch block 2, the tack-down. At the stop, check the edge: nowhere should the base fabric be visible between the tack-down and the piece's edge. If it is, note it; the satin will probably still cover it, but that is your placement error to fix next time.
  7. Stitch block 3, the satin. Let it finish. Unhoop, tear the stabilizer away from the back, and press from the back if you used fusible web.

Reading the result

Look at three things.

The inner edge of the satin. Any fabric fuzz or raw edge visible inside the satin means the piece was cut too small or drifted outward there. On a heart this happens at the tip first, because the satin's inner end sits less deep on a point.

The outer edge of the satin. Any appliqué fabric visible outside the satin means the piece was cut too large or drifted inward on that side, or the satin pulled in more than expected. The file already pushes the outer rail outward by 0.25 mm on woven to absorb pull-in.

Puckers around the border. Stabilizer too light, hoop too loose, or a satin that is dense for the fabric. The troubleshooting guide maps each of these to a fix.

What "pass 92 percent" means

The number under the preview is not a guess. The tool cuts the shape into a satin band and, 300 times, simulates a stitch-out with random errors drawn from measured values: cut size error 0.25 mm (laser kerf measurements run 0.15 to 0.3 mm; a rotary blade on fabric is worse), hand placement 0.30 mm for careful, 0.50 mm normal, 0.90 mm rough, and 0.15 mm of shift during tack-down. A trial is "clean" only if 99 percent of the edge is caught with at least 0.8 mm of bite and no fabric shows past the satin's outer edge. The share of clean trials is the pass rate; at or above 90 percent is a pass, 70 to 89 is borderline, under 70 is a fail.

For the same 100 mm heart the model gives 99 percent with careful placement, 92 normal, 74 rough, and 88 on a knit with a 4 mm satin. The numbers are what the stitch-out prediction guide is about, including where the model is honest about its limits: we validated the geometry against Ink/Stitch on 10 shapes and are collecting real stitch-out reports to calibrate the error values, not stitching thousands of samples ourselves.

Do I need a cutting machine to do machine appliqué?

No. You can lay an oversized scrap of fabric over the placement line, run the tack-down, and trim close to it with curved scissors. A cutting machine only removes the trimming step and makes the fabric edge more repeatable.

Why does the machine stop three times if the thread never changes?

The placement run, tack-down and satin border are saved as three colour blocks on purpose. Each stop is your cue to lay the fabric or trim it. You can use the same thread for all three.

What satin width should a beginner use?

4 mm on woven cotton. It gives a fabric-edge window of roughly 3 mm, which absorbs normal hand placement error. Go to 5 mm on knits and 3 mm only on shapes over 100 mm with careful placement.

What does a 92 percent pass rate mean?

In 300 simulated stitch-outs with realistic cut, placement and pull-in errors, 276 came out with 99 percent of the edge caught and no fabric showing past the satin. It is a model, not a promise; a rough placement drops the same heart to 74 percent.
